And in a way, this reply applies to most of us. We spend long stretches of time waiting or fantasizing about something that may or may not happen in the future, all the while wasting our present. A Permanent Shadow have tackled the concept of mindfulness and living in the now in past releases, such as the single “Now” from debut album “Songs of Loss” or “Play Dead” from 2022’s “Humdrum”. New single “The Wait” also falls into this category. The song’s protagonist, a seemingly unloved underachiever, laments his life situation feeling like a “worn out one-trick pony” and would rather “go to the beach and get comatose” on alcohol than take life into his own hands, until he realizes that life is passing us by while one is “sitting and waiting and hoping and praying” for changes that will not come until you provoke them through your own initiative. New single “Brother” is the first sneak preview of the full-length LP which tackles topics loosely related to toxic and dysfunctional relationships both on a personal as well as a geopolitical level. Musically, the album will be more guitar-driven than previous releases and benefits from a harder sound. “Brother” stands out as a very personal piece in which lyricist CP Fletcher fantasizes about what life would be like if his brother who was never born was around today. In the song’s lyrics, CP imagines what it would be like to be in a band together – either as a rhythm duo playing drums and bass, respectively, or as a Mick-and-Keith style front-of-stage tandem, or alternatively, succeed as bankers or captains of the sea. He goes on to cite the Kray Brothers, The Kennedys and The Coynes (from no-nonsense rock band The Godfathers) as references. CP has been a fan of the Canadian band The Tragically Hip for many years. The song is available in three different versions. Originally titled “Black Lolita”, the track was initially not intended for release, but CP changed his mind after listening back to the original version sung by a guest vocalist. “I had all but forgotten about the song, but I accidentally found a copy on my hard drive and thought that it would be a shame not to re-record and release it with a different title as A Permanent Shadow.” The original was recorded in 2021 as a birthday gift for a soon-to-be past flame of CP’s, inspired by the rather rocky beginning of a relationship that eventually proved short-lived and turbulent. “I wrote this song in a state of absolute euphoria and an unbearable urge to be with a person who in hindsight was not for me. All the red flags were there but I refused to acknowledge them.” “A Xmas Gift in May” is released in its original arrangement which features some interesting musical references to classic Sixties pop like “All you Need Is Love”, albeit in a modern guise using a metronomic backbeat and modern-day production values. CP is especially fond of a remix performed by longtime collaborator Valen Nieto which leans heavily on elements of Eighties Italo Disco. After four well-received singles the Barcelona-based group now releases “Play Dead” to radios. One of bandleader CP Fletcher’s favourite lyrical theme is the passing of time and how little prepared we are for major changes in life. Earlier tracks like “Radical Change” from the first APS album, “Songs of Loss”, as well as “Speedtrain” from “Humdrum” tackle this issue which also informs the lyrical content of “Play Dead”. In this song, a female protagonist sees her life disintegrate as she morphs from “Fun Girl” to “Mum Girl” experiencing a severe decline from “under the starlight” to the “dark side”. The song implies that apart from defamation and aging the lady has to deal with her better half’s suicide attempts which luckily do not result successful. Yet a voice in off reminds her that “beyond the lowest low there is a high” and that she’s “not done yet” so she better not “play dead”. Musically, “Play Dead” grows from a simple piano intro to a bona-fide stomper aided by a catchy chorus and driving synths . The song perfectly represents the broad musical spectrum in which APS navigates with ease. “We don’t define ourselves via a particular musical style”, confirms Fletcher. “We like Eighties music, yes. After “Shining Star”, “Beautiful People” and “This Energy”, on February 25th “Speedtrain” will see the light of day as the final taster for the album “Humdrum”, out one week later on March 4th. The single version is slightly shorter than the full album version and will be made available digitally. The song comes with a video, as always directed by Dani Moreno. In the clip we can see A Permanent Shadow singer CP Fletcher running along the rails with the train fast approaching, while the real-life lawyer Marta Guillemí acts as the one-eyed statue of justice come to life. “Speedtrain” is a song about aging and lost opportunities which laments the passing of time and the inability to let go of the past. “As you get older, you seem to cling to the past much more, because there’s less future left and you realize how finite your existence actually is”, comments Fletcher on the song’s lyrics. “It is common for parents or grandparents to warn you that the older you get the faster time passes, which in your youthful arrogance you brush off lightheartedly. But as the years pass, you suddenly find that indeed, life is rolling like a speedtrain with no mercy, as the song’s chorus implies. And that’s when you start looking back on everything you have and have not done in life, and you ask yourself how much do you have left to make up for lost time.” Despite the bleak lyrical content, musically “Speedtrain” is an upbeat song. Driven by a simple bass riff and an underbelly of synth arpeggios, the track, as the rest of the imminent album “Humdrum”, was recorded by CP Fletcher and his two collaborators Albert Català (keyboards, arrangements) and Valentí Nieto (guitars, bass, production) at Barcelona’s Mini Blind Studios. It is already the eight single in the cannon of A Permanent Shadow whose debut album “Songs of Loss” was released in 2019 and gained quite a few accolades as well as healthy airplay and media exposure. Whereas the original version blends seventies disco with nineties rock, the remix is a bold trip to the eighties applying modern production values, reminiscent of Cold Cave, Hurts or White Lies. The song is a rumination on how modern society has lost touch with nature and human interaction. Granted, COVID did certainly not help matters, however, the pandemic only helped accelerate a trend of online vs. face-to-face which in turn foments a style-over-substance approach to life. While we let others see us at our happiest, busiest and most successful on social media, no one knows or even cares how we feel on the inside. “This Energy” was produced by Valentí Nieto who also plays guitar, bass and synthesizer, while Albert Català (keyboards, piano, synthesizer) was involved in arrangements and preproduction. The dance remix as usual comes with a stunning video directed by Motorzombis singer Dani Moreno. The star of the clip is dancer Alba Jordan who interprets various characters throughout the street-dance performance.
